Megan Makes: DIY Jeweled Collar Sweater

30 November 2011

When I think about holiday dressing, I always think glamour, glitter, sequins and 'jewels', so when I spotted a bedazzled collared tee at loft for over $50 I realized I clearly need to give a little 'love' to a sweater..

And who knew in a few steps, I'd have a Jeweled Collar of my own...for way less.

Here's What You Need
Scissors
Jeweled Beads (I reused mine from an old dress)
Needles and Fishing Line/Matching Thread
Sweater

Here's How To Do It
Line up all your supplies, lay sweater flat (make sure it's even) and sort your 'beads'.
Next place 'beads' where you'd like them to go, play around with placements a few times to see what you like the best.
After your beads are where you'd like them, take one bead at a time and dab a tiny bit of hot glue on the back of each bead, trying not to get any on the thread holes.
Put the bead in place, let dry and secure with thread. Have fun with it, and rock it like it's nobody's business.

And Here's How I Wore It
sweater loft, short c/o clothes hound, tights c/o sculptz, shoes vince camuto, bag target

Zebra Crossing

29 November 2011

There have been a few scarf styles I've been lusting after for quite awhile, and since this one has been spotted in a few of my polyvore sets here on TFD,  it was only appropriate to pick this as one of the three Happy Scarfs I'm featuring these next couple weeks. What do you think? Is it love?

Spotty Legwear

One of my favorite leg wear options during the 'cooler' months is patterned tights, they're the perfect amount of subtle (or sometimes not so subtle) flair. So of course when Sculptz, whom you may remember from last year (and here, and here), sent over a pair of brown leopard print tights (3/$30), I knew I was going to be one happy camper...

Homemade Pecan Pie

I love pumpkin pie as much as the next gal, but sometimes a holiday feast could use a little variety, am I right? Enter pecan pie, it's hearty like pumpkin but gives a little crunch and a just enough caramel flavor to switch it up a bit. And
after realizing that it's a no fuss pie, I plan on making it a lot more, Christmas anyone?
Pecan Pie
( Without Corn Syrup )
  • 1 C Light Brown Sugar
  • 1/4 C White Sugar
  • 1/2 C Butter
  • 2 Eggs
  • 1 Tbsp All-Purpose Flour
  • 1 Tbsp Milk
  • 1 Tsp Vanilla Extract
  • 1 C Chopped Pecans
  • Directions
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

  • In a large bowl, beat eggs until foamy, and stir in melted butter. Stir in the brown sugar, white sugar and the flour; mix well.

  • Last add the milk, vanilla and nuts.

Pour into an unbaked 9-in pie shell.
Bake in preheated oven for 10 minutes at 400 degrees, then reduce temperature to 350 degrees and bake for 30 to 40 minutes, or until done.
Let Cool and Enjoy.

Make Your Own Nail Polish

26 November 2011

Spending hours on Pinterest is rarely a lost cause, especially since it's a beacon of inspiration. And with that being said, I want to thank Pinterest for my latest find, making eye shadow nail polish.
As crazy as it sounded I was determined to try it out just to make sure it was actually 'legit', turns out it is, and it is just as fabulous as it sounds. Say goodbye to tossing those 'broken' eye shadows, and hello to more nail color options....

Here's What You Need
 Clear Nail Polish
Loose Eye Shadow
&
A Little Bowl/Palette

With a makeup brush, add the desired amount of eye shadow to the bowl (I used 1/8 tsp. and got one coat, mix one coat at a time, it dries quickly.) Next, add a few drops of clear nail polish and mix together.

Apply to nails, and let dry, it takes a little longer to dry on your nails so add an accelerator if you're in a hurry. I found that it goes on completely smooth, but can get 'tacky' if nicked before drying.
Add a little glitter if you please...
(Sephora By OPI's Only Gold For Me)
3. Voila! It's the perfect way to get those hard to find pigments, and it's a great way to recycle and reuse. Hellooooo Saving Money!

DIY Open Back Sweater

23 November 2011

Open back sweaters are all over the place this season, from cardigans to chunky knits, there's a style out there for you, all for the purpose of showing off your fabulous back. So why spend "X" amount of dollars on a new open back sweater when you can easily make one in under 10 minutes from something already collecting dust in your closet.

Here's what you need...
 A Sweater
A Ruler
Scissors
A needle and some thread to 'finish the seams' if need be (or fabric glue or sewing machine).
With the rule measure out from each side where you'd like you 'opening' to begin, I chose 4''. Mark with pen, and repeat on other side.
Next, connect your marks and make a straight line on the top. Then measure from the corners where you'd like your 'opening' to end, and mark.
Like so...
Let the cutting begin, start in one corner and cut around your markings...
It should end like this...but be sure to 'clean' up any jagged edges.

Here's how I wore it...
(after making a tweek or two, I ended up rounding the back out a bit.)
sweater agar, dress cynthia steffee, bag kmart, bracelet gift, necklace vintage, shoes vince camuto

Wind Up

Words can't thoroughly explain how much I love this skirt . Between the colors and the 'flow', it just brings joy to my outfit, and even day when I choose to wear it. Now, if it's windy be weary because I apparently gave patrons of Target an eyeful, more than once while waiting with my mother in law for my husband and father in law to come get us. Thank god I wore underwear...heh.

In honor of my mortification, let's swap fashion faux pas stories ;)
