A friend of mine asked me to go to a wedding with him in November and just sprung on me that it's a black-tie event, so I'd need a long dress. Now, My budget is pretty tight at around $40, so I was thinking a fancier solid colored maxi dress and accessorizing with nice jewelry. Do you have any advice on where I could start (ie. online, which stores..) or what an acceptable, cheaper alternative would be?

Getting all glitzed up on budget isn't always the easiest but it can be done, and I think you're on the right track with the maxi dress idea. I've become quite a fan of Asos.com with their free shipping and returns, which makes getting items online a lot less stressful. These are great selections and affordable too! I generally will just buy cocktail dresses without an occasion and save it for a date when I need them. It avoids the finding something at the last minute deal!
