Here's 10 kid and family-friendly things to do in NYC during the winter time

kid and family-friendly things to do in NYC during the winter time, kid friendly NYC, NYC kids winter time, what to do in the winter NYC with kids, family friendly NYC activities, NYC winter activities,
Ok, we didn't have much of a winter this year in NYC but that doesn't mean we were desperate for cool things to do on the weekends in the city with the brood. Sure, we've started to keep it close to our neighborhood, but I've been known to have a list of select favorites to draw us out of our comfort zone (ie: the couch) and spend a day, afternoon or evening out and about.

This Week

February kicks off with a bang and marks the start of Fall/Winter fashion week. I spent most of last week gearing up for this month's events, with a few pit stops along the way because who can really resist an amazing breakfast in the village or the opportunity to pick out a new pair of boots? Really? So, this is the happenings of this week.

- Breakfast at Dominique Bistro -
One of my favorite spots in the west village has never disappointed (see my dinner picks here). David and I tried out Dominique's breakfast on Monday and guys, it was amazing. If there's one thing you have to order whether dining in, or to go, it's the coffee and croissant with jam. As someone who has been craving croissants her entire pregnancy, I was in heaven. It was warm, flaky and the perfect starter for the morning. Obviously I didn't stop the carb overload there and ordered the waffles with fresh berries and chocolate mousse with a heaping side of thick cut bacon. Rich, indulgent and hit the spot especially on an overcast Monday. David went the savory route with Eggs Benedict, a salad and a side of their herb crusted fries (which are super addicting). If you're looking for a brunch or dinner spot in the West Village check out Dominique's Bistro between Gay and Christopher, you will leave full and happy.

- Live Clean Launched A New Baby Line -
Since it's been a bit since my last pregnancy, I feel so behind when it comes to anything baby, so getting a heads up on the eco-friendly, all-natural body product line- from diaper cream to body lotion -makes stepping into newborn and babyhood a little bit easier. I brought some of the products home and hope to share deets soon. You can grab the line at Whole Foods, Target, Walmart, Amazon, and Bed Bath and Beyond - also, it's super budget friendly.

- A Beauty Haul at Alison Brod -
Next, I headed over to the Alison Brod offices for a blowout courtesy of Garnier's new Moisture Lock shampoo and conditioner (which by the way are both amazing). I have it at home and my winter-induced dry hair loves it. Oh, and it's paraben free! Naturally, I couldn't leave the office without doing a little shopping in their beauty closet and brought home some seriously awesome goodies that I plan on testing and sharing soon.

How about these decor goals at the office. So, dreamy.

- Breakfast and Shoe Shopping with Matt Bernson -
Any morning spent in Tribeca is usually a good morning, so when the Matt Bernson team invited me to breakfast at Sarabeth's and a quick stop at the store for a pair of shoes, there was no way I was passing that up.  Especially because those shoes! Croissants were had with a healthy side of salmon, eggs, and cream cheese before heading over and snagging the Kafka boot (also in taupe and black) which you'll be seeing until it's too hot to wear boots any longer. Check them out, you'll be forever obsessed.

- January Popsugar Must Have Box -
January's Must Have Box finally arrived and did not disappoint. I have a few favorites off the bat: the May Designs Desk Calendar is adorable, the Glade no. 3 Coconut and Beach Woods Candle smells amazing, and the Goldfaden MD Fresh A Peel Multi Acid Resurfacing Peel is exactly what my dull winter skin needed. Check them out and grab $5 off with "Shop5".

- National Carrot Cake Day-
My all-time favorite cake has a holiday and as it would turn out it landed right before the weekend (February 3rd). So, I popped into my favorite bakery in Astoria: The New York Bakery for a slice of carrot-y, cream-cheese-frosted heaven. The holidays may be over, but that shouldn't keep you from grabbing a slice. It's practically a vegetable right?

- New Maybelline Lip Colors -
Maybelline just launched a TON of new colors and finishes in time for Valentine's Day. Baby Lips Color Balm Crayon comes in 8 shades and runs for $7, Color Sensational Vivid Matte Liquid now has 10 more statement-making shades (I'm all about Orange Obsession) for $8, and Color Sensational Shaping Lip Liners in 14 new colors for $8. Swatches coming soon!

This Week

After spending most of January stationary courtesy of the flu I've found myself becoming more and more active as far as heading to events, getting things done and trying new things. This week was an excellent example of all of the above. If you've been following along with me on Instastories (@meganzietz) you might have spotted some of these already...

Here's what I've been up to this week...

A fresh blowout from Olivia Christiansen Salon booked with Lookbooker (get $10 off your first booking on the app!). This adorable salon on 48th street between 2nd and 1st Ave. I went with "The Bohemian" style which translated to loose, messy waves, my fave.

Next, Lunch with Scout Bags. Their new Spring collection launches today so head over and check out the new goodies. The 22 new patterns + 4 returning patterns + 3 new products will not disappoint.  The come in a ton of different textiles making them great for just about any job out there, even doubling as a diaper bag maybe? (Also, they're super affordable).

Plus, their lunch at Prune could not have been more perfect. If you're in the city, check out Prune and do yourself a favor and order the burger, it's heavenly.
Plus, homemade strawberry milk and oatmeal cookies - swoon.

At home: I updated the knobs on my tv stand. It's no huge feat but it definitely makes a difference.

And finally, Thursday's adventures. I started the morning off at the Active Collective Trade Show previewing upcoming collections from activewear brands. I immediately fell in love with all of the black and white printed sports bra and legging sets. Major swoon.

Finishing the day off at the Crate and Barrel Spa Day in their own little greenhouse in Bryant Park. Heavenly food, bouquets of crisp white flowers, massages, personalized aromatherapy all in honor of their Spring Collection. I'm in love with everything from the wall hanging to the furniture. I may not have room right this second but I WILL MAKE ROOM for these additions.

Fujifilm Wonder Photo Shop NYC

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Fujifilm Wonder Photo Shop for IZEA. All opinions are 100% mine.

One of the perks of living in NYC has to be all of the great stores at any easy distance. Sure, online shopping is great but being in a brick and mortar store is a full experience. It's like the difference between reading an e-book versus a real book- the feel of the pages, the book smell. You know what I mean? Which is why I was more than a little excited when I learned FujiFilm was opening the Fujifilm Wonder Photo Shop right in the middle of Flatiron. Hello, photographer's dream!

I headed in on opening day- on a colorful pedicab no less- and spent the better part of my morning playing with all the cameras and fun photo booth props, talking about the incredible space with the designers who made the store come to life (apartment goals, guys) and stocking on up all my 'photography needs'. New Yorkers and visitors alike have to make it a priority to pop into the store at least once. Don't let the small exterior fool you, it's quite literally a toy store for grown ups. Head in and pick up a new colorful Instax (and boatloads of film), drool over the amazing decor or even print out some of your favorite photos straight from your phone - It's THE place to let your creative flag fly. Grab washi tape and fun craft paper to customize gifts, a couple new frames and stock up on your greeting card needs. Maybe even pick up some inspo for displaying your pictures: amazing gallery walls anyone? I can't help but love the tiny Instax 'bunted banners' for showing off favorite Instax memories, perfect for parties, entryways and kid's rooms.

The Wonder Photo Shop honestly carries everything from photo booth props for your next party to pencils and clips to hang your works of art. I'm already planning my next trip to create custom gifts for upcoming birthdays and holidays. I'm loving the creative shadow box ideas and the amazing framed pieces. Plus, who doesn't want need a custom mug?

As if the store couldn't be more fun there's a photo booth in the middle of the store for your selfie needs. Grab some outrageously fun props and strike a pose in front of the black and white New York skyline with your significant other or bestie, no judgement for keeping the booth to yourself. I could easily spend the afternoon in the photo booth snapping photos of me making ridiculous faces. The things we do for fun, right?

Want to stick around for awhile? Grab a coffee and snap some Instagram-worthy shots of the store or make yourself at home at the craft table. The store will be offering classes, lectures, and exhibitions led by in-house experts and special guest creators to spark your inspiration further. (Sign up for their emails and stay up to date on events, offers and activities, here)

Head over an let the Wonder Photo Shop inspire you!

Things To Do In NYC This Summer: DIY Ice Cream Bars at the Magnum Ice Cream Pop Up Shop

If there’s one treat I look forward to most in the summer months, it’s ice cream. Obviously ice cream is good anywhere but there’s just something special about enjoying ice cream in the city. Maybe it’s the stroll, taking in the sights while enjoying a heavily sprinkled cone or indulgent chocolate bar. These are probably the main reasons why I got a little too excited when I heard that one of my favorite Ice Cream bar brands, Magnum, was opening a store in SOHO. Hello, sweet indulgence.

The gist of the new pop-up store on Prince, which is is already drawing in huge crowds, is pretty straightforward: you get to create the ice cream bar of your dreams for $7. The store is spacious, with images of adorned Magnum Bars decking the walls, and glitzy seating all around the curvy bar. The bar is a sight: straight out of Willy Wonka’s factory, with a (literally) dazzling variety of toppings. Clearly, it sets the mood for what may be the best ice cream bar you’re ever going to taste.  After you make your way up to the front of the line and set yourself up to order, you are faced with the difficult task of choosing between chocolate or vanilla ice cream, followed by another difficult decision, which chocolate are you going to dip it in? white, milk or dark? Each is made with decadent Belgian chocolate. Then you make your way through the glistening toppings bar. Sure, you only get to pick 3 from the glorious 20+ topping offerings but once you have an idea of what you’re going for it becomes quite easy. Are you a sweet or savory person? Do you want to pile on fancy toppings like gold flakes and rose petals? Or are you going to keep it simple with mint chocolate chips? It’s completely up to you.
The chocolate lover in me couldn’t quite resist a chocolate bar dipped in dark chocolate and then topped with the irresistible cookie crumbles and espresso sugar. Last,    flakes of gold for a touch of glamour, and a drizzle of white chocolate for a truly luxe creation. Almost too good to eat. ALMOST. The only reason it wasn’t inhaled on the spot was because I had to document the experience in full, which included pictures, as my beautiful creation sweat on a crisp 75˚ spring day.
End result? It was incredible and completely worth the wait. Creamy, chocolatey goodness with just a touch of crunch - truly magnificent and I wouldn’t expect anything less from Magnum.
In NYC? The Magnum Store is open from 12-8pm Sunday through Wednesday and from 12-9pm Thursday through Saturday. Do yourself a favor and get yourself a bar, you can thank me later.

Afternoon of Empowerment with Dress for Success and TracFone

I’ll take any excuse to spend an afternoon lunching with a handful of admirable and inspiring women. So I was naturally grateful to be invited to an Afternoon of Empowerment with Dress for Success and TracFone to celebrate their second year in expanding the Success in Calling program. The Success is Calling program is designed to help women navigate the critical first step of employment, the phone interview. I can’t say too much about it right now, but believe me, it’s a phenomenal program that you’ll be hearing lots more about soon.

We all came together at Annisa restaurant where we filled about a half a dozen tables and listened to success stories of women who completed the program in 2015 and have since found success in the workplace.

In between each of the stories, we were treated to delicious appetizers like chestnut gnocchi, as well as tasty entrees like the crispy tofu or pork. I don’t know which part filled me more, the surplus of food or connecting with friends, new and old. I had the immense pleasure of sitting across from ShaVaughn Holloway, a Kansas City Success Story and current Dress for Success Brand Ambassador. Her story was nothing short of inspiring and connecting with her on our mutual struggles reassured me greatly. In particular, I was intrigued by how she mastered her newly acquired telephone interview skills through the Success is Calling program with TracFone. I don’t think that it is much of a secret that I’m the worst on telephone interviews and meetings because I almost always freeze. So hearing that I am not alone and that my troubles are actually fairly common, put me at ease. Turns out, confidence is key and ShaVaughn shared a few tips she learned in building it before and during the call. She clearly demonstrated the value of the program by being such a resource to me. Phone skills are essential, even in my line of work.

As the event winded down, we communed over our fondness for the Butterscotch Pecan Beignets before heading our separate ways. Some to catch their flights back home, and me a hop, skip and a jump back to Astoria.

Want to make a difference in the Success is Calling program? Head over to Walmart and purchase any TracFone device during the month of April or take your knowledge to social media and share your job search and interview tips by using #SuccessisCalling.

A Love Note To February

February, I knew you well . We shared some good times, some not so great. There was a hefty amount of fashion (courtesy of fashion week), a sizable portion of food and no shortage of weather-related drama. Thankfully we're peaking into the second week of March now and I can't help but look back at all the good times we had as the weather starts to head in a favorable direction.

We more or less kicked off our month together off with Fashion week where it was absurdly cold for a few days, forcing me to up my layering game. It felt like the winter fashion olympics. I think I did ok, though, which is more than I can say for the poor souls that opted for sandals instead of boots.  Was it their dedication to footwear, or their wishful thinking? Either way, I can relate.

I will say after the inspiration set on the runway, I'm almost already looking forward to fall. That's what one day of high 70˚ weather will do to you - it will send you in to a daze, where you'll dream of retro inspired layers, tailored coats with fur detailing and obi belts. Until then, I'll kick myself back into Spring mode with a little pastel and floral inspiration a la Ted Baker.

Freezing weather called for lots of piping hot lattes so CUPS {free drinks + $10 credit here with promo code "IMKCR"} came in handy on more than one occasion. It has quite possibly become my favorite tool when navigating the city for a good cup of joe. I also spent a good amount of time last month brushing up on my culinary skills, and by which I mean in the dining out department. I skipped out on a romantic dinner with the husband for Valentine's {Sorry, Dave} and opted to spend the evening with my best Galentine's Tracy and Jackie where we gorged on oversized burgers and chocolate - It could not have been more perfect.

But, my favorite dining experience of the month had to be our time spent in the West Village at Dominique's Bistro where my favored plus one, Jackie, and I sipped on what seemed like bottomless glasses of wine in the dimly lit restaurant at the iconic intersection of Gay and Christopher St. It may have been raining cats and dogs but that didn't stop us from enjoying a piece of Parisian culture. We started off with {likely} the best grilled baby octopus in the city and rounded out our visit with a healthy dose of Steak Frites and a heaping pot of Bouillabaisse, filled with all of the greatness the sea has to offer. After that meal, dessert wasn't an option but their chocolate soufflé was tempting.
All in All, February you did good. See you next year.
